Nomenclature cards are one of the techniques developed within the Montessori Method to help the child in his or her work of language construction and refinement.
They perform a sensory function of image recognition, allowing an excellent practise in visual discrimination. They respond to the child’s need to learn and assimilate new words, providing an important exercise in spatial organization. Not only do cards help them enrich their vocabulary, but also to identify and associate words with the object to be classified and, therefore, to interpret reality.
To be effective and functional, at My Child we created our own nomenclature cards with specific characteristics:
- the images must be real, the child must be able to recognize those elements in reality;
- the background should be white or at least a neutral colour, so that the image stands out and attracts the child’s full attention.
Nomenclature cards can cover a huge range of different topics: from botany to means of transportation, to food.… In the initial stages it is advisable to propose items that belong to the child’s everyday life, so that he can recognize and name them correctly, and then offer him an increasing variety of items.
Our cards are used by both Montessori and English teachers. Written in Italian and English, with different font colours for each language.
The cards activity is always highly appreciated by the children, who gradually experience greater fulfilment through active learning!
