At My School Ticino learning English goes beyond the mere acquisition of words emphasizing experiential learning that allows children to engage actively with different cultures. Language is lived in a constant and natural way and is seen as both a tool for communication and a bridge between cultures.

Therefore, we use every opportunity to build cultural awareness celebrating intercultural events of many Anglo-Saxon countries.

Prior to the day itself we decorate the school and prepare a wide range of appropriate materials for study in class such as books, nomenclatures, puzzles and games using topical vocabulary which we set up in a dedicated area of the class.

To understand the history and meaning of the event we sing songs and watch videos and documentaries. Whenever possible special guests from the relevant nations are invited to give a personal account of their special celebrations.

Neuroscience and scientific research have proved that motivation is key to successful learning, and this is especially true when learning a new language. So, on the day of the event we have fun experiences – we dance, play traditional games, and try special menus prepared by our chefs to discover culinary traditions.

You will find us exploring Irish dancing on St Patricks day, flipping pancakes in a race on Shrove Tuesday or carving pumpkins in costume at Halloween.

Through all these activities that expose the children to various cultures we aim to stimulate curiosity and promote open mindedness believing that Maria Montessori’s vision of education as a catalyst for peace and understanding remains as relevant today as it was when she first pioneered her revolutionary approach.
